A student from Manipur among two selected for free study in USA

Two students from Manipur including one from Nagaland staying in Imphal were among the nine students of India who were selected for higher study in the United States of America under Community College Initiative (CCI) Program of the country.The two students were Jenit Lairikyengbam of Khurai Lamlong of Imphal East district and Weipune Sara, a resident of Nagaland presently staying in Imphal. Both of them were students of Darwin School of Business, Guwahati.The two students have been selected to learn free of cost for one year in the USA. They would receive scholarship of Rs 42,000 per month.A farewell function was organized at Manipur Press Club, Imphal today.Talking to media, family members of the two students maintained that Darwin School of Business has extended a lot of support and help in order to receive the scholarship.Dean of Darwin School of Business, Dr TK Varali said that the scholarship was instituted from 2006 onwards. However due to the lack of awareness on the programme, students of the region have failed to take the benefit.He further said that advertisement for the selection of students for the programme was generally given during November and December every year, maintaining that to avail such facility a student has to complete class-XII.The Community College Initiative (CCI) Program provides a quality academic program at US community colleges intended to build technical skills, enhance leadership capabilities, and strengthen English language proficiency.The program also provides opportunities for professional internships,service learning, and community engagement activities. Participants spend one academic year in the United States and may earn certificates in their fields of study.After completing the program, participants return home with new skills and expertise to help them contribute to the economic growth and development of their country.Eligible fields under this programme are agriculture, applied engineering, business management and administration, early childhoodeducation, information technology, media, and tourism and hospitality management.CCI Program participants are recruited from historically underserved populations. The recruitment, selection and nomination of candidatesin the eligible countries is administered by the Fulbright Commission or the Public Affairs Section of the US Embassy.Since the establishment of the program in 2006, more than 50 community colleges have hosted almost 2,000 participants.
