Land Slide in the NH-2

Senapati(The Hornbill Express) 10th, August: The landslides haveoccurred in some places along the National High -2 from Senapati tothe Kohima stretch. A landslide had occurred between Khongnem Thana and Karong on 9th August evening blocking the major portion of theroad and the debris was not cleared till the late evening of 10thAugust. In the early morning of 10th August, the bee line of heavy vehicles were seen stranded due to the landslide came down from above the highway, the drivers and handymen were seen working hard putting stones and pebbles in the area to make way for the vehicle to pass through. In the late evening, all vehicle have passed through, however, the debris were left unclear.  Such, smaller landslides are witnessed in the stretch from Karong to Maram, however, there is no clearance done till the time of filling this report. It may also be mentioned that the road stretch from Senapati to Maram is having worst condition with pit and deep pot holes, half black topped portion of the road without proper drains been constructed along the highway. The road side bushes also have not been cleared and can cause road accidents.The frequent landslides along the high way have caused sufferings to the common people, the concerned departments need to take up prompt action in clearing up such landslides that block the road to avoid preventable accidents and ease the inconveniences along the NH-2, as it is the only lifeline for the district and state. In what had affected the Manipur State in terms of shortages of essential commodities particularly fuel for last many days due to massive landslide occurred somewhere in Kisama, Naga Heritage village near Phesama, even after the road been restored some days back, the vehicular traffic continue to adversely affect the commuters. On the 10th August mid noon, hundreds of vehicles were stranded for almost four hours along the stretch starting beyond Phesama till Kigwema, due to traffic jam at the mudslide area. Numbers of passengers coming from Mao Gate walked on foot as some were to catch trains and buses at Dimapur for further travel. Women, old aged, college students and children were seen carrying their baggage and walked through the muddy slippery road drenched with frequent showers. Interestingly, some passengers going on foot to Kohima for urgent purpose went to the town and came back to stranded side but there was still not sign of moving of vehicles even at that point of time. However, there was no major commotion broke out except few army personnel yelling and shouting other vehicles to give side so that their convoy trucks and can pass through. Due to the clearance of all army convoy vehicles coming from the Mao-Gate side, the vehicles coming up from Kohima got stranded for almost four hours. However, after the army trucks crossed the landslide area, the other vehicles heading towards Mao started moving.
