IMPHAL, August 9: The 71st Quit India Movement Day was observed in Imphal on Friday by Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) to mark the civil disobedience movement launched in India in August 1942 in response to Mahatma Gandhi’s call for ‘Satyagrah’ (independence).Deputy Chief Minister and MPCC president Gaikhangam along with other Congress ministers, MLAs and MPCC leaders paid rich floral tribute at the photos of Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and other prominent freedom fighters at the occasion.Addressing the function, Gaikhangam said that noted freedom fighters of India are remembered and honoured on the occasion of Quit India Movement Day and called for realizing the desires of the martyrs.Quit India Movement had claimed 10,000 Indians and as much as 60, 000 protesters were detained by the British during the movement.
